Rocky Ridge County Park

Ninety percent of this 750 acre park is a mature oak forest.  Rocky Ridge was acquired in 1968, making it the first county park.  It is perched on a rock-strewn hilltop northwest of Hallam, one of the first places the county's original settlers, who crossed the Susquehanna River, established Homes for sale in york pa.

Features:

  • Multi-Use Trails - Over twelve miles of trails are open to hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers.  Trails are closed to horseback riders and mountain bikers during "wet conditions," as determined by Park Rangers.  For current conditions, call the Parks Office at  (717) 840-7440  (717) 840-7440 for trail updates (available 24 hours a day), or refer to trail open/closed signs located along park entrance areas.  No bikes, horses or pets are permitted in picnic areas.
     Maps of the trails are now available in .pdf format.  If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or 5.0, you will need to download it first.  Then click on the words GET MAP and print a map of the park and its trails. GET MAP
  • Scenic Observation Decks - There are two observation decks located in the park.  One deck is located on the north side of the park and offers a panoramic view of the Susquehanna Valley (ADA accessible).  The other deck is located on the south side of the park and offers a view of the York Valley.
  • Softball Field - One softball field is located near the Hidden Laurel Picnic Area.  Please contact the Parks Office to ensure availability.
  • Volleyball Court - One sand volleyball court is available in the Hidden Laurel Picnic Area.  Please limit play to one hour if another group is waiting.
  • Fitness Trail - The trail starts in Hidden Laurel Picnic Area and ends at the observation deck on the north side of the park.  There are 20 exercise stations scattered throughout this half-mile, cinder, all-weather trail.
  • Hunting - Limited hunting is allowed with special permit issued by the Parks Office.
  • Horseshoe Pits - Located in Hidden Laurel and Oak Timbers picnic areas.

Special Events:

  • Christmas Magic, "A Festival of Lights"- 
    This event is a park sponsored spectacular 400,000+ multi-colored light show.  It features a one-half mile walking trail that winds through Oak Timbers Picnic Area with stops in heated pavilions.  Refreshments are available.  The trail opens the Friday after Thanksgiving and remains open until December 31st.  (Closed December 24 and 25)
     
  • Bird Watching - A popular spring and fall event with both observation decks offering watchers a chance to view hawks, eagles and falcons along with other migratory birds as they head south in the winter and north in the spring.
  • Senior Excursions - download schedule
  • Partners in the Park - A 5K run that is held each fall and co-sponsored by the County Parks and the York Road Runners Club.  This event starts in the Oak Timbers Picnic Area parking lot, then travels along the main roadway, ventures off on a variety of trails and finishes where is began.

Admission is $10. for a carload, or 15 for a 3 day pass.
The Hot Air Balloon Rides Lauch 6am Saturday and Sunday
and 6pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

A Wide variety of Food Vendors
Horse Drawn Carriage Rides
Family oriented Activities all Day
Fireworks on Friday evening at dusk

Inexpensive York County Weekend/Daytrip Getaway's

July is Recreation and Parks Month, "Healthy Lifestyles, Livable Communities... Its Starts in Parks" is their motto.
Whether its picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, camping or just attending a park event, hop off the sofa and check out York County's numerous State and County Parks.
Take a moonlight Bike Ride along the Rail Trail, swim, fish, or boat in Gifford Pinchot lake, or enjoy moonlight boating at Lake Redman, rent a canoe or kayak and take a trip down a creek or the Susquehanna. Take your dog for a walk at the Canine Meadows, new off leash area at John Rudy County Park. Or check out the stars the public can view various celestial objects once a month free of charge year around at the Rudy Park Observatory. Bring the kids to the Environmental Education Center at Richard M. Nixon Park where they can see wildlife exhibits, live snakes and a bird observation window. Fly a kite at the crest of Mt Pisgah at Samuel S. Lewis State Park or just take in the spectacular panoramic view of the Susquehanna River. Take a trip to the rolling hills of Southern York County to 3452-acre Codorus State Park where you can Wildlife watch, fish in the 1,275-acre Lake Marburg, or swim in the huge pool that sits on a bluff overlooking Lake.

Christmas Magic at Rocky Ridge County Park

Christmas Magic 2008, Festival of Lights at Rocky Ridge County Park Marks its 25th season this year! Christmas Magic is a half mile long walking trail with over 400,000 christmas lights, which includes lighted holiday scenes, and five enclosed heated pavillions. Christmas Magic is the largest program sponsored by the York County Parks each year.  Over the years since the opening, over 500,000 people have passed through the gates. During this time there is musical Entertainment scheduled, the Park Rangers hold a food drive that benefits local charties, and Students from the York Culinary Arts School will be producing ice  sculptures at Rocky Ridge County Park at 12:00 p.m. on Dec. 10.  There is also food vendors to fill your bellies and warm you up. So Dress warm and get outdoors with your family this holiday season!
