All About York

Also known as the “White Rose City,” York is the county seat of York County, Pennsylvania and is home to over 43,000 residents. York is rich in historic architecture due to it well-preserved buildings from the 18th century and contains four historic districts. Notable buildings include General Horatio Gates House ,York Meetinghouse, Moorish Revival Temple Beth Israel, York Central Market, and Billmeyer House. These are located in the historic districts of Springdale Historic District, Northwest York Historic District, York Historic District, and Fairmount Historic District.

York's origins date back to 1741 when it was founded by settlers from the Philadelphia region. At the time it was also known as Yorktown. In 1787 York became a borough, and then 100 years later in 1887 it was incorporated as a city. York's historic importance is particularly noted in the fact that it was the capital of the Continental Congress and was where the Article of Confederation were drafted and adopted.

Shopping & Dining

York has a wide range of shopping and dining options. Central Market House, located in downtown York, is an historic farmer's market in operation since 1888 and features fresh local produce and goods. York Galleria is an indoor mall just northeast of York. York Galleria contains over 90 stores and services, including stores such as David's Bridal, Hollister California, Land's End, and many more, along with a number restaurants in the food court. West Manchester Town Center is located just west of York and features stores such as Burlington, Kohl's, Ann Taylor Loft, DSW, and more.

When it comes to dining, York certainly does not disappoint. The Left Bank Restaurant & Bar is named after a famous restaurant on the Seine River in France and offers seasonal menus and a cosmopolitan dining experience. The First Post serves up traditional style food set in an historic venue that dates back to the 1850's when it was a single-family home. White Rose Bar & Grill has been a family operated restaurant since 1933 and has received a number of awards, including Susquehnanna Style's Best of York award for Best Bar Food, Best Brunch, Best Burger, Best Business Lunch Spot, Best Casual Date Spot and Best Happy Hour Spot.

As of 2015, York had an estimated population of 39,821. There are over 14,000 housing units with a median household income of $105,429.

Education

Students living in York are served by the Hillsborough Township School District. The 9 schools in the district include Amsterdam Elementary School, Triangle Elementary School, Auten Road Intermediate School, and Hillsborough High School, among others.
